The FGS – Fundação Gonçalo da Silveira (Gonçalo da Silveira Foundation) was set up in 2004, and stemmed from an initiative of the Portuguese Jesuit congregation. It is a non-governmental organisation for development (NGDO), recognised as a not-for-profit institution.
The initial priority was to optimise the work of its missions and missionaries overseas. As the work through the Jesuit missionaries developed over the decade, FGS extended its partnership base and redefined the mission: to tackle inequalities and social injustices by building a Global Citizenship that promotes common good and contributes to change the circumstances that generate poverty at a local and global level. Today, we are involved in projects covering Global Citizenship Education and Cooperation for Development. We also provide humanitarian and emergency aid, through our links with international organisations workingin the field of aid.
FGS is a member of the Portuguese NGDO Platform, Rede de Educação para a Cidadania Global, The Portuguese Diversity Charter, PAR - Plataforma de Apoio aos Refugiados (Refugee Support Platform) and, at an international level, Edujesuit and Xavier Network, both networks of Jesuit Organisations.
